We should all applaud the healthy situation of the Thames Valley market because it has relevance to the national economic situation.
The region is known as the technology hub of the UK with its range of large and small, domestic and foreign companies at the forefront of technical progress. Of course there are dynamic technology companies grouped around Cambridge, Oxford and other places such as Manchester and Edinburgh.
However, the headquarters of the large international firms are the key to the Valley, feeding off Heathrow for both freight and passenger traffic. In turn that means success for surrounding areas such as Maidenhead, Reading and West London.
A case in point is provided by Bracknell where the surge in lettings and the development in the town centre are moving it on. On the horizon, or rather in the tunnel, is Crossrail and we know from previous experience that such a new transport link can have a dramatic impact.
Transport, particularly by rail, has been one of the successes of recent governments and given the growth of the population there can be no let up in providing new facilities.
The logic of that situation points to a third runway for Heathrow and it is a blot on government that such a decision cannot be made.
